How do I sponsor a member of my family to come to Canada? You must meet certain eligibility requirements as the sponsor, and the individuals you sponsor must also meet certain criteria.
Spouse
An qualified citizen or permanent resident of Canada may sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child under this category. The applicant must not be inadmissible to Canada in order to be considered for permanent residency. If they are at least 18 years old and the partnership is legitimate, a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner may be sponsored. If it is established that they joined the relationship solely to obtain permanent residency in Canada, the application can be denied.
You may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident if you are a Canadian permanent resident or citizen.
Child / Dependent
You may normally sponsor dependent children (including an adopted child) to become permanent residents if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Citizens of Canada with children born outside of the country will be eligible to apply for citizenship for their children. Some considerations, such as whether the Canadian citizen inherited citizenship by birth outside of Canada, exclude all Canadian citizens from being eligible.
Parent / Grandparent
To express your interest in being sponsored by a parent or grandparent, you must first fill out an online application. The IRCC accepts submissions, reviews them, looks for duplicates, and then selects 20,000 applications on a first-come, first-served basis. On January 28, 2019, at 12 p.m., the online submission form to demonstrate your intent to sponsor will open. You’ll need to know if you meet the minimum income criteria and what documentation you’ll need to show your interest in sponsoring your family members to immigrate to Canada.
You may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident if you are a Canadian permanent resident or citizen.
Sponsor your relatives
If you meet the following criteria, you might be able to sponsor orphaned close relatives and other extended family members. To sponsor a relative to become a permanent resident of Canada, you must meet certain income requirements and be able to financially support them from the time they enter the country until they turn 20. It is also the duty of the individual who is being supported to make an effort to support themselves.
Sponsorship is available for orphaned close relatives who are under the age of 18 and do not have a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner. They must be biologically or adoptively related to you (siblings, nephews, nieces, grandchildren).
